What is SHTF

SHTF SituationWhat is SHTF? SHTF stands for ‘Shit Hit the Fan’, or when the worst-case scenario occurs in your environment. SHTF can be a situation like a natural disaster, terrorist attack, an economic collapse, a disease outbreak, or even the apocalypse. During this time, you may be left with limited resources, with basic necessities hard to come by. Thus, being prepared for an SHTF situation with an SHTF gear list is important in ensuring you have the proper supplies necessary when left with limited resources.

When SHTF having a plan of preparation is critical to success, therefore having a plan mapped out can help not only yourself but your whole family. The following steps to take include the following listed below.

  • Come up with a Bug Out Plan: When SHTF you have two options, either bug out or hunker it. Bugging out is when you have to move away from your current location very quickly because your position has been compromised. In the event that this occurs, and your home or shelter is no longer safe you will want to have a bug out plan crafted and ready to execute. This may include a plan of where you will flee too and a bug out bag that you will take with you. A bug out bag is a bag that will have all your essential survival items to help sustain you for at least 72 -hours.
  • Come up with a Hunkering-in Plan: The second option is to hunker in when SHTF. Hunkering in is when you stay in the confines of your shelter or home while chaos erupts outside. To successfully hunker in you need to have the necessary supplies to sustain yourself and your family for a long duration of time. The supplies to have include food, water, hygiene products, medical supplies, radio, batteries, flashlights, lighters, and candles.
  • Maintain and Update Your Supplies: It’s bound to happen that we will tap into our supplies at some point and have to replenish the supplies used. Make sure that you don’t slip and not replace the supplies like food, water, matches, candles, etc. Also, updating your supplies can also be important, as increasing issues can be placed in the forefront like chemical attacks. Chemical attacks have become an increasing worry in recent years as these forms of attacks have occurred in countries like Syria for the last year. Chemical attacks can be very dangerous not only to the environment in which it is deployed into but also to the people exposed making it an SHTF scenario. Chemical attacks can be released in liquid releases or vapor releases making protection for both crucial.
